Growth Spurt for PrimaryPlus-Ashland Growing Medical Team… Growing Services… Growing Location

On the brink of its five-year anniversary of serving the tri-state, PrimaryPlus – Ashland is having an amazing growth spurt. Not only is their building expanding, their service list is growing and so is their medical team! After relocating in mid-April to its new location (432 16th St., Ashland), the Federally Qualified Health Center set its sights on expanding their mission of Quality, Advanced, Affordable Healthcare.

The PrimaryPlus network is headquartered in Vanceburg, Ky., but operates seven locations throughout the Ohio River valley stemming from Augusta, Ky. to Ashland. The renovations and growth of the PrimaryPlus-Ashland office will build upon encouraging patients to have a “medical home” while also providing a convenient, comprehensive one-stop shop for the patients’ medical needs. PrimaryPlus-Ashland currently offers primary care, women’s health, pediatric services and osteopathic manipulation therapy (OMT). OMT is a series of hands-on techniques to diagnose and treat certain illnesses or injuries. Osteopathic physicians move and reposition patient’s muscles and joints using techniques that focus on stretching, and use gentle pressure and resistance to effect change. OMT is a great complement to medical care.

The Ashland renovations are set to be completed in early fall and will include the addition of x-ray/ultrasound; acupuncture treatments; an onsite pharmacy with great discounts through its 340B program; an expanded procedure room; and many more exam rooms. The exterior of the building will also get a new look — currently the front of the building faces 16th Street but upon completion, the building layout will reverse and 17th Street will be the new entrance of Primary-
Plus-Ashland (facing the former AEP building) allowing for more accessible parking and a pharmacy drive-thru.

With the growth of their services and space comes a growing medical family. In January PrimaryPlus welcomed Dr. Tyler Elam and in June, the health center added Dr. Kristen Murphy and Dr. Logan Murphy, joining nurse practitioners Stacy Hasenauer, APRN; and Muna Vonderheide, APRN.

Marketing & Community Relations Director, Tracy McGuire, recalls an impactful statement by a patient several years ago, “PrimaryPlus is more than just a family doctor…it’s like having a doctor in the family!” To this day, this quote resonates with us and holds especially true for our growing Ashland medical team. “We are so excited to see the impact they are going to make, individually and as a team, on the health of our community,” states Tracy McGuire, Marketing & Community Relations Director of PrimaryPlus. “Each one of them brings compassion, comfort and their own unique perspective on quality-driven healthcare.”

Meet the PrimaryPlus-Ashland Team

Tyler J. Elam, DO (Family Medicine) joined the PrimaryPlus-Ashland team in January of this year. He’s no stranger to the area growing up in nearby Morehead, Ky. He completed his undergraduate degree at Morehead State University. He then attended medical school at the Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of Pikeville followed by a family medicine residency at East Tennessee State University Quillen College of Medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Osteopathic Association.

Dr. Elam’s approach to healthcare centers around the belief that patients are composed of mind, body and spirit – those three components must function in unison for maximum life quality. Less is always MORE and he heavily focuses on wellness and alternative medicine including Osteopathic Manipulation Therapy (OMT). Dr. Elam is also currently training in acupuncture and will be offering that in Fall of 2019 at PrimaryPlus-Ashland!

Dr. Elam loves spending time with his family. He has a strong faith and is actively involved with his church and mission projects. He loves running, swimming, traveling, playing the harmonica and all things Disney.

Logan Murphy, DO (Family Medicine) has been practicing medicine since 2014 and in June of this year joined the PrimaryPlus-Ashland family. Dr. Murphy graduated with his Bachelor of Science from Morehead State University and his Doctor of Osteopathy from the Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of Pikeville. He completed his residency program with St. Claire Family Medicine in Morehead, Ky. He is board certified in family medicine and OMT by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians.

Dr. Logan Murphy approaches healthcare for his patients with an open mind but also with an open heart. He believes in listening to his patients and their needs.

Dr. Logan Murphy is married to Dr. Kristen Murphy, has also joined the PrimaryPlus-Ashland family. They reside in eastern Kentucky with their 16-month-old daughter. His hobbies include photography, podcasting, renovating their vintage camper and spending time with friends and family.

Kristen N. Murphy, DO (Family Medicine) joined the PrimaryPlus team June 2019 but has been practicing medicine since 2014. She grew up in the area, graduating from Boyd County High School in 2006. She earned her Bachelor of Science from Morehead State University and then continued her quest to become a physician by attending Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of Pikeville. She remained in the region for her residency program working with St. Claire Regional Medical Center. Dr. Murphy is board certified in family medicine and OMT.

Dr. Kristen Murphy understands that patients are complex beings composed of mind, body and spirit. Sometimes, the care they need is physical, chemical, spiritual or something else altogether. Her approach to medicine is to find ways to help the patient through what they are going through utilizing her range of skills to provide the best care.

Dr. Kristen Murphy is married to Dr. Logan Murphy and mother to a beautiful little girl. Dr. Murphy is skillfully talented in music … singing, playing piano, ukulele and trumpet. She serves on the worship team at their church. She also shares a love for photography with her husband. Most of all she loves taking care of and “loving-on” her family.

Fun Fact about the Murphys: During both Dr. Logan Murphy and Dr. Kristen Murphy’s medical school rotations, PrimaryPlus was honored to have them as students throughout several of their office locations including PrimaryPlus-OB/GYN headquartered in Maysville, Ky., and at PrimaryPlus-Tollesboro, Ky., working with the family practice team. PrimaryPlus loves seeing this “full circle” experience … from hosting students to then having them become part of their medical family once their education and training is complete.

Muna Vonderheide, MSN, APRN (Women’s Health & Family Health) joined the PrimaryPlus family in September 2014 with the opening of the Ashland location. Muna graduated with her nursing degree from Ashland Community and Technical College and later continued her education at Frontier Nursing University where she received her Master’s in Nursing as both a Women’s Health and Family Health Nurse Practitioner. She is board certified in Women’s Health by the National Certification Corporation and board certified in family practice by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

Muna’s approach to healthcare is holistic, believing that the mind and body are connected. It is her goal to work with her patients to take a TEAM approach (provider and patient being the key players). Prevention is also a very important component in her healthcare model. Muna offers a full-range of women’s health services spanning across generations serving daughters, mothers and grandmothers. In addition to gynecological care, PrimaryPlus-Ashland also offers prenatal care for expectant mothers and has a great partnership with UK Healthcare offering ultrasound services and high-risk obstetrics care via telemedicine.
