It’s no time to hibernate: A lot is happening at the Y

Ashland Area YMCAThings don’t slow down at the Ashland Area YMCA in December … everything just moves indoors!

Soccer is one of those things that moves inside. “Indoor soccer is very similar to outdoor soccer, but there are some obvious differences,” said Kevin Busick, YMCA Youth Sports director. “The most obvious change being that the game is played on a hard court, which is smaller. Because of this, there are fewer players,” he said.

Although the playing area is smaller, indoor soccer is just as strenuous as games played outdoors. “You have less ground to cover, but there are fewer players covering that ground,” Busick noted. Indoor soccer also uses a different type of ball – futsal – which is smaller and has less bounce.

Indoor soccer helps players develop new skills, technical control, coordination of their feet, and passing ability, he noted. Because there are fewer athletes in play, there are more touches with the ball, and accuracy has to be greater. “The typical indoor soccer player will improve their eye-foot coordination and decision making,” Busick noted.

For those who would like to learn more about indoor soccer – or perhaps join a league, the Ashland Y has several opportunities coming up:
