Minimally Invasive OBGYN Procedures Are Maximally Effective

J. Brian Frederick, MD

Minimally Invasive OBGYNLaparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery has become the mainstream in operating rooms across the United States. The field of gynecologic surgery is clearly not an exception, as minimally invasive gynecology has gained enormous momentum within the specialty.

Advances in computer technology and laparoscopic instruments have allowed us to offer a minimally invasive approach to a much broader range of patients. The field of gynecologic surgery is proudly included in this medical and surgical marvel.

Dr. Frederick and his team offer minimally invasive procedures with your convenience, comfort, and privacy in mind. Continue reading to learn more about three procedures that have helped many women.

da Vinci ~ Robot-assisted surgeries offer numerous benefits
Some people raise an eyebrow when they hear of surgeries performed with the use of a robot. After learning about the technique and the advantages it provides, patients are eager to learn more.

For some patients we’re able to offer surgery through one incision that we hide with the belly button that would have previously required a large incision.  This allows a much faster recovery time of 2-3 weeks instead of 6-8 weeks.  It also greatly reduces scarring with the incision often being difficult to see within a few months.

The da Vinci procedure allows Dr. Frederick to carefully guide surgical instruments and a magnifying camera into their patient without making the traditional, and large, 3-4 inch incision.  Because of the magnification, he can sew and is able to perform more delicate work than he could with unassisted hands.

Dr. Frederick and his team were among the first 30 sites in the United States to offer OBGYN procedures using the da Vinci. Dr. Frederick was trained as an early adopter of the new technology and he now has over a year of experience performing minimally invasive procedures using the state of the art technology. He was the First Surgeon in the region and state to be trained in single incision hysterectomy. Last year, Dr. Frederick was asked by the da Vinic developers to train other surgeons using his technique. Currently, there are only 80 surgeons in the country that are trained and able to offer this approach to hysterectomy.

Essure ~ Effective, pain free, permanent birth control
Essure is a permanent birth control procedure that works with your body to create a natural barrier to prevent pregnancy. The Essure procedure offers women benefits that no other permanent birth control can.

Essure allows a tubal sterilization to be performed in an office setting with just mild sedation. There is no recovery time, no incision, no pain.  It has been FDA cleared for over ten years and has proven to be the most effective form of permanent contraception.  Laparoscopic tubal ligation (what most people think of as “tying tubes” is still being performed but requires general anesthesia with intubation and about 1-2 week recovery. It also is significantly more likely to fail than is the Essure. Since 2002 over half a million women and their doctors have trusted Essure as the most effective permanent birth control.

During the Essure procedure, which takes less than 10 minutes, Dr. Frederick slides the small, soft inserts through the natural pathways of your vagina and cervix into your fallopian tubes, so no surgery or incision is required. The very tip of each insert remains visible to your doctor, providing immediate confirmation of proper placement. The flexible Essure inserts are made out of the same trusted, silicone-free material used in heart stents, so they bend and conform to the shape of your fallopian tubes while remaining securely in place.

Essure is covered by most insurance providers and if the Essure procedure is performed in a doctor’s office, payment may be as low as your co-pay, depending on your insurance plan.

Endometrial ablation ~ Safe and effective alternative for heavy periods
Endometrial ablation is a procedure that can be performed in the office to effectively treat heavy periods.  Patients are able to resume normal activity the following day.  It is over 90% effective in greatly reducing the amount of bleeding each month and nearly 40% of patients have no monthly bleeding afterwards. Many women who might have required major surgery can now be effectively treated using this procedure.  For more than a decade, Dr. Frederick has been successfully relieving women of heavy menstrual flow.

No two women are the same. The problems are different. The procedures vary. But Dr. Frederick and his team always have the same goal: Solving your problems with smaller (or no) incisions. Less discomfort. Fewer restrictions. And a quicker return to your regular day-to-day life.
